There’s nothing easier than visiting Auxerre!

Situated in the heart of Burgundy, Auxerre enjoys a prime location that makes it an easily accessible destination, whether you’re travelling by car, campervan, train, bus, bike, boat or on foot. Just 1 hour 45 minutes from Paris by train and close to major motorways, the city is an ideal base from which to explore the Auxerre region, its vineyards, its exceptional heritage and its unspoilt landscapes.

Because a more sustainable holiday begins with the journey itself, the Tourist Office encourages visitors to opt, where possible, for sustainable transport and public transport to reach and explore the destination.

By boat

The River Yonne, a tributary of the Seine, flows through Auxerre, which marks the start of the Canal du Nivernais. What a lovely idea to arrive in Auxerre by boat, drifting peacefully along the water!

  • You can reach Auxerre from the north, travelling from the English Channel along the Seine for 360 km (passing through 6 locks) as far as Paris, then continuing along the Seine from Paris to Montereau-Fault-Yonne – a distance of 98 km with 8 locks to pass through – and finally taking the Yonne from Montereau to Auxerre, a distance of 108 km with 26 locks to pass through
  • You can also reach Auxerre by boat from the east via the Canal de Bourgogne, which starts at St Jean de Losne and runs for 242 km (passing through 189 locks) to Migennes, where you can join the River Yonne and head for Auxerre
  • You can reach Auxerre from the south via the Canal du Nivernais, which starts at Decize and ends at Auxerre, covering a distance of 174 km and passing through 116 locks
  • And finally, you can reach Auxerre from the west by starting your journey on the Canal de Briare, which runs from Buges, near Montargis, to Briare. This canal connects to the Canal du Nivernais in the south via the Canal Latéral à la Loire, and to the Seine in the north via the Canal du Loing.

As you can see, all (water) routes lead to Auxerre!

Tip: the pilgrim’s passport for the Way of St James is available from the Tourist Office and at the Aux_R Etape guesthouse

By bike

Auxerre is an ideal destination for cycle tourists. Situated at the junction of several cycle routes, the town is easy and safe to reach, whilst offering a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the Burgundian countryside.

From the south: the Canal du Nivernais cycle route
Stretching 174 km, the Canal du Nivernais cycle route links Decize to Auxerre. This route, which follows greenways and towpaths, allows you to reach the town in peaceful surroundings, alongside the water. All along the route, you’ll come across pleasure boats, flower-bedecked locks and charming villages. The lock keepers and locals, who are often delighted to chat with travellers, are happy to share their tips and recommendations.

From the north: following the Yonne valley
From the north, you can reach Auxerre by following the River Yonne from Migennes, the starting point of the Burgundy Canal cycle route, which runs as far as Saint-Jean-de-Losne, near Dijon. This route offers a pleasant link between Burgundy’s main cycle routes and provides easy access to Auxerre.

For lovers of long-distance routes
Fancy a challenge? The Tour de Bourgogne by bike is a loop of around 660 km that takes in the region’s most beautiful greenways. The route passes through the Canal du Nivernais (and therefore Auxerre), the Canal de Bourgogne, the Canal du Centre and the Voie des Vignes.
