The origins of the castle go back to the 10th century and the bishop of Auxerre, Héribert, brother of Hugues Capet. Rebuilt, enlarged and embellished by its successive owners, the most famous of whom were Jacques Coeur and Mademoiselle de Montpensier, known as the Grande Mademoiselle, it is a majestic pentagon of pink brick, with corner towers crowned with campaniles, an inner courtyard built by Le Vau and an English-style park. The castle of Saint-Fargeau, which was the birthplace of the mother's family of the academician Jean d'Ormesson, is largely evoked in the novel of the latter, Au plaisir de Dieu, and was used as a setting for the filming of the television series based on this work.
