The end of winter in Japan
Traditionally celebrated on 3 February, Setsubun – also known as the ‘Bean-Throwing Festival’ – marks the end of winter. According to the ancient lunisolar Koyomi calendar, it marks the most significant change of season of the year. On this occasion, the Japanese drive the oni (demons) out of their homes and celebrate the imminent arrival of spring.
The Abbey invites you to celebrate Setsubun in the company of Hokusai, Hiroshige and their fantastic prints.
