Trained in sculpture by Fernand Py, François Brochet (1925–2001) began his career in Paris. In 1955, he founded the ‘Groupe de l’Arquebuse’, which included Bernard Buffet amongst its members. Encouraged by André Malraux, he embarked on *Le Massacre des Innocents* in 1960. His figurative work, influenced by Cubism and Misérabilism, enjoyed international success.
