Description
A pioneer of American independent cinema, Ida Lupino began her career as an actress before establishing herself as a director, screenwriter and producer. With *The Bigamist*, she continues her exploration of sensitive and unconventional social issues, focusing on the life of a couple seeking to adopt.
A preliminary investigation reveals that Harry is leading a double life. The desire for a child that he was unable to fulfil with Eve, his first wife, he is now realising with Phyllis, whom he met whilst on a business trip to another city. Through the characters’ frustrations, desires and vulnerabilities, the film reveals each person’s motivations and the consequences of lying, without ever succumbing to moral judgement.
Characters portrayed with great psychological subtlety, a modern take on female roles… One thing is certain: in stark contrast to Hollywood productions of the 1950s, Ida Lupino makes her mark!
