His universe is shot through with freedom, colour and the energy of the party... One day, Thomas Lebrun had to take us on a journey behind Vaval. A journey to the Caribbean, to a different way of dancing and expressing carnival, between the vitality of tradition and joyful irreverence.
As head of the Centre chorégraphique national de Tours, Thomas Lebrun has been working with the artistic territories of the French overseas territories for over ten years. Today he has invited three of their figures - Gladys Demba, Jean-Hugues Miredin and Mickaël Top - to join forces around a carnival tradition that links Guyana, Martinique and Guadeloupe. Leading the way is "King Vaval", whose effigy is reputed to carry away all the year's tears in flames... He is followed by "the devil", a scarlet African cousin studded with horns and mirrors, and finally "the fwèt" (the whip), now wielded by children... Using the dancers' bodies, this fantastic trio is divided into three colourful solos, and told through the strong, subtle words of Guyanese author Emmelyne Octavie. Carnival is approaching, and it's time to go far away...
