Since Lascaux, each art history has seen its own evolution, right up to the modern art market. Contemporary artists work like Leonardo da Vinci thanks to patrons who give them international exposure. At the same time, others continue to work in their "caves". After introducing the subject in its (pre)historical dimension, Harry Bellet would like to open a discussion with the participants.
Harry Bellet studied art history, worked for the Centre Pompidou and then for the Fondation Maeght. He is a cultural critic at Le Monde. He will fascinate you with his account of thirteen famous scandals in his new book "Faussaires Illustres", published by Acte Sud. Delightful tales, sometimes comic, often pathetic, sometimes tragic. These cases are analysed to combat two ideas: no, there is no such thing as a forgery 'genius' (except those who have not been caught); yes, they are everywhere, and they are very difficult to detect. 40% of the works in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art are forgeries, at least that's the opinion of its former director Thomas Hoving.
