Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, a survivor of the Gulag, Rainer Sievert embarks on an investigation that brings together history and family memory. A gripping Journey to the East that could well offer some insights for our times...

1944. Germany is defeated in the East. With the logic of the blocs, a polar cold descends on Europe... A biting reality at -50° for an ex-soldier of the Reich, slave of the terrible "frozen guillotine", alias Bopkyta - pronounced Vorkouta -, one of the harshest camps of the Gulag. He arrived as an invader, none other than Rainer Sievert's grandfather. He would not return for nine years. Using this man's silence as a starting point, Sievert revives the "memory theatre" for which he has the secret. In an enchanting setting that puts the horror at a distance, this grandson shares his astonishment and questions an individual destiny and its shadows in the eyes of history. Using letters, photos, films and documents, Bopkyta weaves together history and the present, reality and bitter humour, to sketch out a European fresco step by step... a fresco that takes on a disturbing dimension when the ill winds return.
