"If you know any werewolf husbands, at least send them to school with us. It can never be said enough that to be classical is to be of all times. And we would gladly do without the very topical echo of these last lines of the École des maris... Two brothers, Sganarelle and Ariste, are entrusted by a dying father with the guardianship of his daughters - Isabelle and Léonor. It is up to them to bring them up, and when the time comes, to "marry them or dispose of them". To Sganarelle, who intends to put Isabelle's heart under a bell and marry her off without delay, Molière has a few tricks up his sleeve. Jealousy, desire for possession, blindness to oneself and others... The actors of La Mandarine Blanche make the most of these ridiculous things. In this incredible game of snooker called L'École des maris, the team led by Alain Batis plays with all the contrasts: simplicity and extravagance of the play, modern clothes and powdered wigs, electric music or acoustic tones, alexandrines that start to sing... It also looks towards a forgotten art of Japanese street theatre, the kamishibai, the name of a reduced stage where the scenery slides around like large wooden slides. Enlarged to the scale of the Theatre, this device provides the changing visual framework of a play where the truth of some is not that of others... But where love, the only one that counts, triumphs in a dazzling way. A lesson in life and theatre!
