For more than a century, Chekhov's work has represented for each generation an incomparable haven of humanity, anxiety, irony and comfort. And a question: by what mystery do our lives seem inevitably, fatally, to escape us? The Seagull, which triumphed in 1898, is a very strange "comedy" whose pleasant atmosphere conceals a drama. It opens on the stage of a modest country theatre where the illusions of the young playwright Treplev are shattered. Treplev, Nina, Arkadina, Trigorin, their relatives... a community bound together by art, life and love. Impossible ideals. On this earth, feelings are not reciprocated, art divides people and life is irreparably damaged. Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman aptly follows the thread of this tale and offers her performers a superb set design, all changing colours and light wood. Theatre at its best!
