"The history of Italy, as we often forget, is a history of migrants: men and women who took with them a little of the roots torn from their land and the echo of their songs. "The history of Italy, as we often forget, is a history of migrants: men and women who took with them a little of the roots torn from their land and the echo of their songs. The Alps took them beyond the known valleys to the rest of Europe, and the oceans pushed these waves even further, spilling millions of Italians onto the coasts of other continents, particularly the Americas. From the 19th to the early 20th century, this phenomenon took the form of a veritable exodus, sparing no Italian region. It resulted in an enormous production of songs, with no known author, transmitted orally and capable of expressing, far better than any statistics, the collective sense of loss, uprooting, fear but also the hope of finally finding a place to live with dignity.
Performing some of these songs, Laïla Sage and Lorenzo Valera (Terracanto) will take us on a journey of sound to discover the history of these distant migrant voices whose echoes have never ceased to ring in our ears.
With Laïla Sage: vocals, Lorenzo Valera: vocals, guitar, accordion.
