Released in 1994, Deceitful Sun is directed by the most Chekhovian of Russian filmmakers, Nikita Mikhalkov. In the summer of 1936, a Russian family enjoys the mild summer weather at their dacha, gathered around the patriarch Sergei Kotov, a respected colonel and hero of the Red Army. The unexpected arrival of Dimitri, Kotov's former love rival, puts an end to this carefree atmosphere. Under the guise of an ordinary family reunion, Deceptive Sun plunges us into pre-war Russia, where feelings of joy, hope, fear and anxiety intertwine, in the early days of the great Stalinist trials. Nikita Mikhalkov takes a serious subject and delivers an intense and touching film. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994 and was nominated for an Oscar the same year.
