Louis Mazzini, a young man from a fallen noble family, seeks to avenge his mother's death and reclaim his title of Duke. As he is not a direct heir, he must eliminate no less than eight members of the Ascoyne family, all of them delightfully zany, who have the misfortune to precede him. Robert Hammer debunks English nobility with delicious cynicism... and great elegance. Add the performances of the two lead actors - Alec Guinness plays eight roles, including that of a woman, and Denis Price, as the manipulative but endearing main character - and you have a gem of British cinema.
