Accused of theft, Colin Smith finds himself placed in a rehabilitation centre. The headmaster wants to modernise rehabilitation methods and encourages the young man's athletic prowess. He puts him through draconian training, with the aim of winning an upcoming competition and reaping the benefits for the centre. But these solitary races are just so many excuses for the young man to escape into his own thoughts, and his libertarian spirit remains intact.
